Why do I need a Blocked Account?
In order to enter Germany, you need a valid visa which can only be issued once you have deposited a specified amount of money in a German bank account ('Blocked Account'). This is to ensure that you are able to pay for your own living costs when studying in Germany. This is the amount that you have to deposit in order to prove your financial ability when studying in Germany.
How long are you planning to stay in Germany? Simply indicate the length of your planned stay in Germany. This will determine your Blocked Amount as in most cases you need to block €720 for every month that you are planning to stay in Germany. If you have planned to stay in Germany for longer than 12 months just select 12 months. Your blocked account can easily be extended after this time period, for another 12 months or less.

If you intend to stay for more than 12 months, you need to open a Blocked Account for 12 months first and then extend your Blocked Account at the end of first year.
What's your Monthly Blocked Amount? The Monthly Blocked Account is required for meeting the living costs of student while studying in Germany. Currently (as of Aug. 17), foreign students must prove at least € 8,640 per year (or about € 720 per month) at the disposal. The Blocked Account entitles the student to withdraw only € 720 per month. The Remaining Balance remains blocked remaining duration of course of study. In rare cases, some German Federal Foreign Offices might also require an Additional Basic Sum to be deposited into the Blocked Account for the duration of the study.

Are you required to deposit any Additional Basic Sum? In some very rare cases the German Federal Foreign Office might require you to deposit an "Additional Basic Sum". This is an additional amount on your Blocked Account which only needs to be entered if the German Federal Foreign Office specifically inquires this. Don't enter an Additional Basic Sum without the particular request by the German Federal Foreign Office. If you have to enter an "additional basic sum" it is just a security and this sum remains blocked during your time in Germany.
In rare cases, the Foreign Autorities require an Additional Basic Sum.
